Nice. This video was shared in our LEO Satellite Repeater Contact Group today by VU2TEK who could make this antenna and work his first ARISS contact! 73 de Jon, VU2JO
thanks for nice information. I'm considering trying 160 m with a hwef 80m and a 200uH coil and 160 extension. I was just wondering what toroid core you have in your unun given 160m? Mix 43? Mix31?
Very useful video, very succinctly presented, staying on topic and presenting just what is needed. Surprised there aren’t more comments over this long a period of time.
So you could use copper wire instead of the tape? I have ground copper wire I would want to use. Thanks. Nice video.

Boo. AI 👎
The 2 different driven elements can be fed from the same coax due to the RF signal taking the path of least resistance (ohms relating to frequency wavelength and length of driven elements) like water does. Antenna length matching the electrical wavelength of the signal will give the least amount of resistance due to antenna electrically matching length of signal wave. Fan Dipoles for HF (multi band dipoles with multiple radiating elements fed from same feed point) operate in this manner also.
thank you for this line of videos. i have one of these radios, is is a great unit. but why does yaesu keep killing there products? i have three if there radios ( vx8dr, ft897, ft818)and all are now gone.
how do you set the time? Mine can't fix it
Please do not take the Lords naame in vein
Is there an application that listens to and translates morse code?
Great little tuner. It likes to go crazy sometimes when you transmit on 90W with the FT-891
Does the yaesu 981 have 10 11 and 12 meters.
20 to 25 wpm would you good , at 15 wpm there's a tendency to count the dits and dahs. I know you can increase the speed, but it distorts the vocal component
*promosm*
Love mine.
i dont think he know how to use the radio himself .
It looks pretty complicated to use. Is this radio outdated these days? There is a new one unused here locally that got me curious.
Cool radio. How would this compare with the new FT5D as far as features and aprs etc?
It has a lot of features but the menu can be quite frustrating. The built in APRS modem works fine, but of course it would be great if you were able to interface with it externally. Hard to get to work with digirig
the way you hold the antenna makes a difference - you will get much better reception if you ensure that the elements are pointing up and down, instead of side to side. Repeaters are vertically oriented, and so are hand helds, mobiles, and bass stations.
Vertical Polarization and Horizontal Polarization make a significant difference in signal strength due to direction that wave is traveling.
damn this audio is harsh.
Thanks for sharing this video. Cheers and 73!
Wondering how do you change modes. I did not see a MODE button on the top like the FT857D had and did not see MODE in any of your video when you wre showing some sub menu options.
to me water "proof" just says water "resistant". at the price point of this radio, and as it is no longer made. (why do company's find out they made a great product, then stop making it?). i have no interest in losing it.
Danke für das tolle Video.73,von Wien.Österreich.😊😊😊
Nice overview, but please, please, please, keep the camera still in the overviews so I can read what you are showing! (I know, details follow later, but this way the overall shots are not very useful.)
Sorry i didn't mention it before but the 6M is also over 3 swr. Thanks
Great video on this auto tuner, so I purchased the MFJ-939Y and added it to my FT-891 radio. I have a vertical 80M-6M (multiband) Moonraker GPA-80 antenna. All bands have a swr of 1.7 or less EXCEPT for the 80M (3.8 MHz) which the swr goes off the scale. Has anyone else had the same issue with any of their bands not tuning in? Thanks again for the great video.
Please send to me your complete morse code learning respectfully this is great
I discovered a while ago that if you press PTT and up on the mic it will send a carrier and change the meter from power to SWR, very convenient, just set 5 watts for AM for tuning once. The 891 is one of the most underrated radios in Ham Radio!
whaaaaat? Where's that documented? Seems like it should be on page 1. Very cool
@@NVRMTmotion Not sure if it's in the manual, I saw it in a you tube video, I think it was designed that way for Yaesu's screwdriver antenna for Mobile use. it works great with the MFJ-939Y, off the top of my head I can't remember if I had it set to external tuner or ATAS, Just don't forget to set AM to 5 Watts.
What are your data filters set to?
I’ve listened up until the 2 minute mark, and everything is correct. I am an amateur radio Operator and 30 wpm is my operating speed of choice. All is good here! 73 DE K6JSC
Thank you!
Explanations are far to quick to understand for the novice of the product. You have to speak more slowly and show the screen slower. Some persons can explain things so that anyone can learn and understand! This was not possible in this case. A thumbs down from me.
watch the again, and again.
Great video, doesn't matter how long ago it was, the technology and measurements are still the same. I will be holding a com course with a local group and have been looking to do a project like this with them. This was a great video. 73 de KK7IWW
Hey man do you usually just drift and ride the tides in and out of the bay?
yaesu radios won't run the tuner if SWR is too high (presumably for their proprietary tuners). so the first time needs to be done manually on the tuner and rest can be on the radio as long as you don't deviate too much
Useful if the other guy knows cw🤣
Can it be foldable?
Pasarlo a DMR
Hey man, what kayak are you on? I'm looking for a kayak myself for the bay but I want one that's pretty stable.
It’s a Big Fish 108. It’s super stable but heavy! If you got the money go hobie.
Daft question... how do I connect the antenna line to both VHF and UHF driven elements?
How is this on offshore? And choppy water
Off what?
@@KM6JUR you know like maybe 3 or 4 miles offahore
Or inshore
Please, mode DUPLEX active? My VX8-DR only simplex and -rpt / +rpt
i used mine today to make contact with the iss repeater, no duplexer needed they came in clear at over 1000km away
So do you have to turn the tuner on individually or does it turn on voa the radio solely? I.e. can i mount the tuner under my seat?
I'm told a duplexer is needed for something like this , is it totally nessisary I'm told I'll get weird harmonics using it for vhf uplink and uhf downlink
Great job! Im so happy to have such huge trees, your video made me so happy to watch!!
Nice fish! That looks like fun it almost looks to easy from your point of view lol
3:30 is a black croaker. 2:15 not sure, could be a white seabass?
Right on man! Thanks for the intel.
